Manifesto for building an effective Ocean Knowledge System (draft[1])

The role of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Ocean Literacy (OL)

In the context of the Ocean Dialogues, building on the outcome of their many discussions and presentations, Marina and ResponSEAble have developed a first draft version of a Manifesto for developing an effective Ocean Knowledge system to support ocean governance.

Help us identify the main key principles and actions, fill in the form!

The starting point

A wide mobilization of all components of society is required for addressing today and future ocean challenges, and for seizing in a sustainable manner the development opportunities that the ocean offers.

Our working assumption

An ocean knowledge system associating all stakeholders who are (1) producing, (2) translating and (3) using knowledge, is a prerequisite to effective ocean governance and to support wide mobilization and engagement. Such an ocean knowledge system needs to cover all aspects of the human-ocean connections, and bring together different types of knowledge, from empirical knowledge to science and innovation.

[1] Disclaimer: the Manifesto for building an effective Ocean Knowledge System was drafted by Olga Mashkina, Saša Raicevich, Pierre Strosser and Francesca Ronchi based on results from the 2019 Ocean Dialogues, the co-creation joint event by MARINA and ResponSEAble Horizon 2020 funded projects. The Manifesto will follow a review and input process by the participants of the Ocean Dialogues before it is finalized and published.
